Welcome to our latest Interior Design guide on ‘how to choose a paint colour’. We provide our top expert tips on how you can choose the perfect paint colour for your interior.

Know your style

Getting to know your style is key to choosing the perfect paint colour. If you really don’t know then start gathering images of interiors you like. Visit places you’ve been blown away by before, what colours are they using? Begin mood boarding! We have a blog post on how to create a moodboard here. Start researching, this will help define your style.

Gather paint samples

This is something you can very easily do for free. Pop into your local paint store or hardware store like B&Q and collect paint samples you like.

Take your moodboard with you. Hold the swatches near your moodboard and collect close matches on your favourite images. As tempting as it is, try not to collect too many colour cards. This will start to feel overwhelming when you have too many at home. Collect your top three at most.

Tip: if you’re sharing your space with a friend or family member, take them with you too. This way you can make the decisions together and know why you’re heading in the direction you are heading.

Pull all of your existing and proposed finishes together

Now you have your paint samples and your moodboard, take both of them into the space where the new paint colour is going to be situated. Look at what is already situated within the space.

For example, what is the floor finish? Is this an existing finish? If you are introducing new samples, make sure you have these to hand. What is the sofa fabric or the rug is within the space? Whatever it might be hold your samples closely together.

Consider the lighting

Whilst you’re in your space with all of your samples, make sure you gather your moodboard and physical samples at different periods of the day. Ideally when there is natural light throughout all of the different times of day and also access the paint colour at night time too. Using your artificial light to check the colours.
